Things worth knowing about "E570"

E570 is the EU designation for fatty acids as an approved food additive. They are used as release agents, coating agents, and antifoaming agents in various food products.

What is E570?

E570 is the European Union designation for fatty acids used as a food additive. Fatty acids are organic compounds that occur naturally in animal and plant fats. In the food industry, they are primarily used as release agents, coating agents, antifoaming agents, and emulsifiers.

Chemical Properties

Fatty acids consist of a hydrocarbon chain with a carboxyl group at one end. They can be saturated or unsaturated. The fatty acids grouped under E570 include:

  • Stearic acid (saturated fatty acid, from animal or plant sources)
  • Palmitic acid (saturated fatty acid, commonly derived from palm oil)
  • Oleic acid (monounsaturated fatty acid)
  • Lauric acid (saturated fatty acid, e.g., from coconut oil)

The fatty acids used can be of both plant and animal origin, which is relevant for certain dietary lifestyles such as vegan, halal, or kosher diets.

Use in Food Products

E570 is used in a variety of food products and production processes:

  • Baked goods: As a release agent to prevent dough from sticking to machinery or molds
  • Confectionery and chewing gum: As a coating agent to improve surface quality
  • Dietary supplements: As an excipient in tablets and capsules (e.g., stearic acid as a flow regulator)
  • Edible fats and oils: As an antifoaming agent during processing
  • Instant products: To improve solubility and texture

Health Assessment

Fatty acids classified as E570 are considered safe for consumption when used within approved quantities, according to current scientific evidence. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has not established a specific ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for E570, as these fatty acids are natural food components that the body metabolizes normally.

In very high amounts, saturated fatty acids such as stearic acid and palmitic acid may contribute to elevated LDL cholesterol levels. However, the quantities consumed through E570 as a food additive are generally negligible.

Possible Intolerances

Individuals with known fatty acid intolerances or sensitivities should review the ingredient lists of food products. Such reactions are, however, very rare.

Labeling and Authorization

E570 is approved as a food additive in the European Union and is regulated under EU Food Additives Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. On food ingredient labels, E570 is listed either by its E-number or as fatty acids. In the United States, the corresponding fatty acids are classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the FDA.
