Things worth knowing about "E599"
E599 is a food additive classified as a carrier substance. It is used to stabilise and evenly distribute other additives or active ingredients in food products.
What is E599?
E599 is the EU-approved designation for magnesium silicate, a synthetically produced inorganic compound authorised as a carrier substance in food products. Carrier substances are used to dissolve, dilute, disperse, or otherwise physically modify food additives, flavourings, nutrients, or other substances without performing a technological function in the final food product themselves. E599 should not be confused with the similar compound talc (E553b), although both belong to the silicate group.
Properties and Composition
Magnesium silicate (E599) is a white, odourless, and tasteless powder. It is composed of magnesium and silicate components and features a porous structure with a large surface area. These characteristics make it particularly suitable as a carrier for other substances. In the food industry, E599 is primarily used in powder mixtures, tablets, and capsules, as well as in certain food preparations.
Applications
- Carrier for flavourings and additives: E599 can absorb other food additives and distribute them evenly throughout food products.
- Food supplements: In tablets and capsules, magnesium silicate is frequently used as an excipient to support the processing and stability of active ingredients.
- Powdered foods: As a carrier substance, E599 helps to improve the flowability and homogeneity of powder blends.
Safety and Authorisation
E599 is authorised as a food additive in the European Union and has been evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Magnesium silicate is considered safe for consumption when used in the approved quantities. It is not significantly absorbed by the human body and is largely excreted unchanged. Allergic reactions to E599 are very rare and have been poorly documented to date.
Labelling
Foods containing E599 must declare this additive in the list of ingredients either under its E-number designation E599 or under its chemical name magnesium silicate. This allows consumers who wish to monitor specific additives in their diet to identify the presence of E599 in a product.
