What is E903 (Carnauba Wax)?

E903 refers to the food additive carnauba wax, a naturally occurring plant wax extracted from the leaves of the carnauba palm (Copernicia prunifera), a tree native primarily to Brazil. The wax is harvested from the dried leaf dust and processed into a fine yellowish powder or solid plates.

In the European Union, E903 is an approved food additive used primarily as a glazing agent and coating agent. It forms a thin protective film on the surface of food products, giving them a shiny appearance, extending shelf life, and protecting against moisture loss.

Use in Food Products

Carnauba wax is used in a wide variety of food products. Common applications include:

Confectionery: Gummy sweets, coated candies, chocolate-covered products, and chewing gum benefit from the glossy finish provided by E903.
Fresh fruit and vegetables: Citrus fruits, apples, and other produce are coated with carnauba wax to replace the natural wax layer removed during washing, helping to preserve freshness.
Coffee beans: Roasted coffee beans may be coated with E903 to enhance shine and reduce moisture absorption.
Food supplements: Tablets and capsules use carnauba wax as a coating and release-control agent.

Safety and Tolerability

E903 is considered safe by both the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). EFSA conducted a re-evaluation of carnauba wax as a food additive and confirmed that there are no safety concerns at the approved levels of use.

Carnauba wax is not meaningfully absorbed by the human digestive system and is excreted unchanged. It is therefore considered physiologically inert, meaning it produces no biological effect within the body.

Allergic reactions to E903 are extremely rare and barely documented in scientific literature. No known interactions with medications or other nutrients have been reported.

Labelling and Regulation

In the European Union, E903 is approved under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. Foods treated with carnauba wax must display the indication glazing agent along with the name carnauba wax or the E-number E903 on the packaging.

Carnauba wax is a vegan and vegetarian product, as it is entirely plant-derived. It is therefore suitable for people following a plant-based diet.
