Things worth knowing about "E944"

E944 (octafluorocyclobutane) is an approved propellant gas in the food industry. It is chemically inert, colourless, and odourless, used in specific packaging applications.

What is E944?

E944 is the food additive designation for octafluorocyclobutane, a fully halogenated fluorocarbon gas also known as perfluorocyclobutane or RC318. It is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas approved as a propellant under EU food additive legislation. Its chemical formula is C₄F₈.

Chemical Properties

Octafluorocyclobutane belongs to the group of perfluorocarbons (PFCs). It is chemically very stable, non-flammable, and does not readily react with other substances under normal conditions. This chemical inertness makes it suitable for certain technical applications in the food industry.

  • Chemical formula: C₄F₈
  • State at room temperature: gas
  • Colour and odour: colourless, odourless
  • Flammability: non-flammable
  • Chemical stability: very high (chemically inert)

Use in the Food Industry

E944 is used as a propellant in the food industry. Propellants are gases used to expel food products from pressurised containers or aerosol cans without altering the taste, colour, or composition of the product. Due to its chemical inertness, octafluorocyclobutane does not interact with the food itself.

The practical use of E944 in food products within Europe is very limited. Although it is approved as a food additive across the EU, it is rarely found in consumer food products in practice. The authorisation is primarily of a technical regulatory nature, providing a framework for potential industrial applications.

Approval and Regulation

In the European Union, E944 is approved as a propellant under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is responsible for the safety assessment of food additives in the EU.

  • Approved as: Propellant
  • E-number range: E940 to E949 (propellants)
  • Regulatory basis: EU Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008

Safety and Health Assessment

Octafluorocyclobutane is considered physiologically largely inactive due to its chemical inertness. As it is barely metabolised in the body and is chemically very stable, no direct toxic effect on humans is expected at quantities typical in food use. There is no evidence of acute toxicity at ordinary levels of exposure.

It is important to note, however, that perfluorocarbons are well-known greenhouse gases with very high global warming potential and are therefore subject to strict environmental regulation. The global warming potential (GWP) of octafluorocyclobutane is considerably higher than that of carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Environmental Considerations

Perfluorocarbons such as E944 are long-lived greenhouse gases. They break down very slowly in the atmosphere and contribute significantly to climate change. For this reason, they are subject to international environmental agreements, and industry is increasingly replacing them with more environmentally friendly alternatives where possible.

Labelling of Food Products

If E944 is used in a food product, it must be declared on the product ingredient list in accordance with EU labelling regulations, either as E944 or by its chemical name octafluorocyclobutane.

Macronutrients are the three main nutrients -- carbohydrates, proteins, and fats -- that provide the body with energy and support vital physiological functions.

Food craving

A food craving is a sudden, intense desire to eat specific foods, often high in sugar or fat. It can be triggered by blood sugar fluctuations, stress, or sleep deprivation.
