Elastin ist ein essentielles Strukturprotein des Körpers, das für die Dehnbarkeit und Rückstellkraft elastischer Gewebe verantwortlich ist.
Elastin kommt vor allem in der Haut, den Blutgefäßen, der Lunge und im Bindegewebe vor. Gemeinsam mit Kollagen bildet es ein Gerüst, das Zug und Spannung aushält und sich wieder in die Ausgangsform zurückziehen kann.
Mit zunehmendem Alter oder durch oxidativen Stress nimmt die körpereigene Elastinproduktion ab, was sich in Faltenbildung, Elastizitätsverlust der Gefäße oder Lungenerkrankungen äußern kann. Auch chronische Entzündungen, UV-Strahlung oder Nikotin beschleunigen den Elastinabbau.
