Wissenswertes über "Electrolytes"
Electrolytes are vital minerals that are dissolved in body fluids and act as electrically charged particles (ions).
The most important electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, phosphate and hydrogen carbonate. They regulate central bodily functions such as nerve conduction, muscle contraction and the fluid and acid-base balance.
A balanced electrolyte balance is essential for physical equilibrium. If there is a deficiency or excess of certain electrolytes, this can lead to symptoms such as muscle cramps, weakness, cardiac arrhythmia or neurological problems. A targeted supply of electrolytes is particularly important in the event of heavy sweating, vomiting or diarrhoea.
Electrolytes can be taken in via food or in the form of special drinks and food supplements - especially during high levels of physical exertion or illness. They also play a central role in stabilising the body in medical care, for example with infusions.
