Emotion focusing is a psychotherapeutic approach that regards emotions as central to human experience and as a primary driver of psychological change. The core principle is that feelings should not be suppressed or avoided, but consciously acknowledged, understood, and processed. The term is closely associated with Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), developed in the 1980s by psychologists Leslie Greenberg, Laura Rice, and Robert Elliott.
Emotion focusing is grounded in the idea that emotions serve an adaptive function: they provide essential information about personal needs, values, and responses to the environment. However, when emotions are chronically avoided or poorly regulated, this can lead to psychological difficulties such as anxiety, depression, or relationship problems.
The approach distinguishes between different types of emotions:
Emotion focusing employs a range of therapeutic techniques to facilitate access to emotions and support their processing:
Emotion-Focused Therapy is applied across a wide range of psychological conditions and challenges, including:
Numerous clinical studies support the effectiveness of Emotion-Focused Therapy. It has been particularly well studied in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and couples' relationship problems. Meta-analyses indicate that EFT produces significant and lasting improvements in psychological well-being compared to control conditions. The therapy is recognized as an evidence-based method by various professional organizations and clinical guidelines.
Unlike Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which primarily targets the modification of thoughts and behaviors, emotion focusing places direct emotional experience at the heart of the therapeutic process. The approach shares elements with humanistic therapy (especially person-centered therapy as developed by Carl Rogers) and Gestalt therapy, but is more structured and empirically grounded.
