In the classic incremental test, workload is progressively increased on a cycle ergometer or treadmill. Blood samples are taken at regular intervals to measure lactate concentration. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), also known as spiroergometry, combines an exercise test with continuous measurement of respiratory gases.
