What is Epitalon?
Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetically produced tetrapeptide composed of four amino acids: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and glycine. It was originally developed in the 1980s by Russian scientist Professor Vladimir Khavinson and his team at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. Epitalon is classified as a bioregulatory peptide and is a synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring polypeptide epithalamin, which is produced by the pineal gland (epiphysis).
Mechanism of Action
The most widely discussed mechanism of action involves the activation of the enzyme telomerase. Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division. When telomeres become critically short, cells enter a state of senescence (aging) or undergo programmed cell death. Telomerase can lengthen telomeres and may therefore theoretically extend the lifespan of cells.
- Telomerase activation: Epitalon is thought to increase telomerase activity in somatic cells, leading to telomere elongation.
- Antioxidant effects: Preclinical studies suggest a reduction in oxidative stress, which is considered a key driver of cellular aging.
