It is mainly transmitted via saliva, which is why it is also known colloquially as the "kissing disease" virus. Infection with EBV is often asymptomatic, but can cause mononucleosis (mononucleosis), which is characterised by severe fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat and fever. After the initial infection, the virus remains in the body for life and can be reactivated if the immune system is weakened, which is associated with chronic fatigue or autoimmune diseases.
The Epstein-Barr virus primarily infects B lymphocytes and epithelial cells, allowing it to spread effectively throughout the body. In acute cases, it causes an immune response with fever, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes, while in latent form it can persist unnoticed in the body for years. EBV reactivation is associated with diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome (chronic fatigue syndrome, CFS), multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis and even certain lymphomas. The diagnosis is made using antibody tests for EBV-VCA-IgM and EBV-EBNA-IgG, which can detect an acute or past infection.
As there is no specific antiviral therapy for EBV, treatment focuses on symptomatic relief and strengthening the immune system. Naturopathic approaches rely on a combination of antiviral, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory measures.
