Things worth knowing about "Erythrose"

Erythrose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) with four carbon atoms. It occurs naturally in metabolism and plays a key role in the pentose phosphate pathway.

What is Erythrose?

Erythrose is a monosaccharide belonging to the group of tetrose sugars, meaning it has four carbon atoms in its molecular structure. The biologically relevant form is D-erythrose, which appears as an intermediate in human metabolism. Erythrose occurs naturally in small amounts in certain fruits and fermented foods.

Chemical Properties

Erythrose belongs to the aldose group of sugars, as it carries an aldehyde group. Its molecular formula is C₄H₈O₄. As a tetrose, it is one of the smallest naturally occurring sugars. The D-form and L-form are mirror-image isomers (enantiomers) of each other. In biochemistry, only D-erythrose plays a relevant physiological role.

Occurrence and Sources

  • As an intermediate in the pentose phosphate pathway (an important metabolic pathway in human cells)
  • In trace amounts in ripe fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, and cherries
  • In small concentrations in fermented foods and beverages

Biological Function and Metabolism

In the human body, erythrose occurs primarily as erythrose-4-phosphate, a phosphorylated form of the sugar. This compound is a central intermediate in the pentose phosphate pathway, a side branch of glycolysis. This metabolic pathway serves, among other things, to produce NADPH (an important cellular reducing agent) and ribose-5-phosphate, which is required for the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA).

Additionally, erythrose-4-phosphate is a precursor for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids (phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan) in plants and microorganisms via the shikimate pathway. This pathway does not exist in humans, but is pharmacologically significant as it serves as a target for certain antibiotics and herbicides.

Medical and Nutritional Relevance

Erythrose as an isolated dietary component has no independent nutritional significance and is not classified as an essential nutrient. The body produces erythrose-4-phosphate itself as part of the pentose phosphate pathway.

In the cosmetics and personal care industry, erythrulose (a related ketose sugar) is used as an active ingredient in self-tanning products for the skin, often in combination with dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Erythrulose is structurally related to erythrose but is not identical.

Safety and Toxicity

Erythrose is considered safe in the amounts found in foods and in the human body. There is no evidence of toxic effects at normal levels of occurrence. As a food additive or in cosmetics, erythrose itself is not widely used; only the related erythrulose finds cosmetic application.
