Things worth knowing about "Eucalyptus citriodora"

Eucalyptus citriodora is a lemon-scented eucalyptus tree native to Australia. Its essential oil is used in medicine, aromatherapy, and as a natural insect repellent.

What is Eucalyptus citriodora?

Eucalyptus citriodora, also known as lemon-scented eucalyptus or by its updated botanical name Corymbia citriodora, is a eucalyptus tree native to Australia. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is recognized by its intensely lemony fragrance. The essential oil extracted from its leaves is used worldwide in natural medicine, aromatherapy, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Active Compounds and Mechanism of Action

The primary active compound in Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil is citronellal, which can account for up to 80% of the oil. Through chemical processing, citronellal is converted into p-Menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), a substance with proven insect-repellent properties. Other relevant constituents include:

  • Citronellol: exhibits antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects
  • Isopulegol: demonstrates antifungal and antibacterial properties
  • Eucalyptol (1,8-cineole): present in small amounts, supports respiratory function

PMD is considered one of the most effective plant-based insect repellents and is registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an effective repellent against mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects.

Traditional Use

In Australian folk medicine, leaves of the lemon-scented eucalyptus were traditionally used to treat respiratory conditions and for wound care. In South America and Asia, the plant oil was also applied as a natural insect repellent and remedy for joint pain and fungal infections.

Medical and Health Applications

Insect Repellent

PMD derived from Eucalyptus citriodora is the most well-documented plant-based insect repellent. Studies confirm comparable protection against certain mosquito species to synthetic agents such as DEET at concentrations of 30–40%. It is recommended for protection against malaria-, dengue-, and Zika-transmitting mosquitoes.

Antimicrobial Activity

In vitro studies show that Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties, inhibiting the growth of various bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. However, these findings are primarily derived from laboratory settings, and clinical evidence in humans remains limited.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

Citronellol and other terpenes in the oil inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory mediators (cytokines). Animal studies and initial clinical observations suggest a soothing effect on joint pain and rheumatic complaints when the oil is applied topically.

Aromatherapy and Relaxation

The fresh, lemony scent of the oil is used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, enhance concentration, and reduce stress. Preliminary studies suggest a calming effect on the nervous system, although the evidence base in this area requires further strengthening.

Dosage and Usage Guidelines

Eucalyptus citriodora oil is generally not taken internally. Typical forms of application include:

  • Topical application: The essential oil should always be diluted (1–3% in a carrier oil) before applying to the skin.
  • Insect repellent: Commercial products typically contain 30–40% PMD as the active ingredient.
  • Inhalation/diffuser: A few drops in an aroma diffuser for aromatherapy purposes; recommended session time is 20–30 minutes.

Important note: Pure Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil must not be used on children under 3 years of age or applied to the face of young children. Internal use is contraindicated without medical supervision.

Safety and Side Effects

When used as directed for external application, Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals (a patch test is recommended)
  • Eye irritation upon accidental contact
  • Rarely: headaches or dizziness with intensive inhalation

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare provider before use. Interactions with medications are unlikely with purely topical application but possible with oral ingestion.
