Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure to correct malpositions, sagging, or diseases of the eyelids for medical or aesthetic reasons.
Eyelid surgery refers to surgical procedures performed on the upper or lower eyelids. It is carried out for both medical and aesthetic reasons. Medically indicated procedures aim to restore visual function or treat eyelid conditions, while aesthetic procedures focus on improving the appearance of the eye area.
Blepharoplasty is the most commonly performed eyelid surgery. It involves removing or repositioning excess skin, muscle, and fatty tissue from the upper or lower eyelids. It can improve the visual field when drooping upper eyelids obstruct vision.
Ptosis refers to drooping of the upper eyelid. The levator palpebrae muscle, which lifts the eyelid, is tightened or reattached to bring the lid into its correct position.
Ectropion describes an eyelid that turns outward, while entropion refers to an inward-rolling eyelid. Both conditions can cause irritation, corneal damage, and excessive tearing, and are corrected surgically.
Benign or malignant tumors of the eyelid (e.g., basal cell carcinoma) are removed surgically. After resection, the eyelid is reconstructed using plastic surgery techniques to restore both function and appearance.
Prior to surgery, a thorough ophthalmological examination is performed to assess visual acuity, eyelid position, and tear function. Blood-thinning medications should be discontinued in advance after consulting a physician. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, usually on an outpatient basis.
As with any surgical procedure, risks include:
After the procedure, cooling and resting the eye area are important. Eye drops or ointments help keep the eye moist and prevent infection. Sutures are typically removed after 5-7 days. Swelling and bruising usually subside within two weeks. The final result may not be fully visible for several weeks.
