- Elevated diaphragm: Conditions such as hepatomegaly (enlarged liver) or ascites can push the diaphragm upward, compressing the diaphragmatic surface and reducing lung capacity.
- Basal atelectasis: Collapse of lung tissue at the base is frequently observed postoperatively or in bedridden patients, directly affecting the diaphragmatic surface area.
- Imaging: In chest X-rays and CT scans, the relationship between the inferior lung border and the diaphragm is routinely assessed to detect pathological changes.
Topographical Relationships
The facies diaphragmatica is in close topographical relation to the abdominal organs situated below the diaphragm. Diseases of these organs can directly affect the lung through the diaphragm:
- Right side: liver and right kidney
- Left side: stomach, spleen, and left kidney
These close anatomical relationships explain why subphrenic processes -- such as subphrenic abscesses -- can lead to reactive pleural effusions or respiratory compromise.
