Fascial thickness measurement is an imaging diagnostic procedure in which the thickness of fascia is measured using ultrasound technology (sonography). Fascia are connective tissue sheaths that surround and connect muscles, organs, and other structures throughout the body. Changes in fascial thickness can indicate pathological conditions, overuse injuries, or structural adaptations of the tissue.
Fascia (from Latin: fascia = band, bundle) are flat, dense layers of connective tissue composed of collagen and elastin fibers. They envelop muscles (muscle fascia), organs, nerves, and blood vessels, playing a central role in force transmission, posture, and mobility of the human body. Altered fascial thickness can lead to pain, restricted mobility, and functional disorders.
Fascial thickness is typically measured using high-resolution diagnostic ultrasonography (sonography). A transducer (probe) is placed on the skin and emits high-frequency sound waves. These waves are reflected differently by various tissue layers, creating a detailed cross-sectional image. On this image, fascia appear as hyperechoic (bright) lines and their thickness can be precisely measured.

Normal fascial thickness varies depending on body region, age, sex, and physical activity level. A thickening of the fascia may indicate inflammatory processes, chronic overuse, or fibrotic changes. Thinning may point to atrophy or degenerative processes. For example, a plantar fascia thickness exceeding 4 millimeters is considered indicative of plantar fasciitis.
Fascial thickness measurement is highly examiner-dependent and requires experience in sonography as well as standardized measurement techniques. The lack of uniform reference values and individual anatomical variations complicate interpretation. Additionally, deep or poorly accessible fascial structures are often difficult to assess with ultrasound alone.
