Things worth knowing about "Fat metabolism"

Fat metabolism refers to the processing, storage and utilisation of fats (lipids) in the body.

Fats are essential sources of energy and play a key role in many vital processes such as the formation of cell membranes, hormone production and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). Fat metabolism involves the digestion of dietary fats, their transport in the blood and their conversion into energy or storage in adipose tissue.

The fats contained in food are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol in the gastrointestinal tract by bile acid and enzymes (lipases). These pass through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. As fats are insoluble in water, they are packaged in lipoproteins (e.g. LDL and HDL) to be transported in the blood. In the tissue, fatty acids can be used as an energy source or stored as triglycerides in fat cells. When required, e.g. during fasting or physical activity, the stored fats are mobilised and converted into energy.

Targeted nutrients and dietary supplements can have a positive effect on fat metabolism. One important active ingredient is carnitine, an amino acid-like compound that supports the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria - the power stations of the cells where fats are converted into energy. Carnitine is said to promote fat burning, especially in athletes and people with obesity or lipid metabolism disorders.

Regular exercise, especially endurance sports, a healthy diet that avoids saturated fatty acids and sugar and integrates unsaturated fatty acids (e.g. from nuts and fish), as well as stress management to avoid the release of stress hormones such as cortisol can improve and optimise fat metabolism.

Fats

Fats are essential macronutrients that provide the body with energy, support cell membrane structure, and enable the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
