The ferritin value is an important laboratory value that provides information about the iron stores in the body.
Ferritin is a protein that stores iron and makes it available to the body when required. It is mainly found in the liver, muscles and blood cells and plays a central role in iron regulation. A low ferritin value can indicate iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia, while a ferritin value that is too high indicates iron overload or inflammatory processes.In contrast to the serum iron level, which measures the amount of circulating iron in the blood, the ferritin level shows how much iron is actually stored in the body.
A low ferritin level is often the first sign of an iron deficiency in the body, even before the serum iron level drops or signs of iron deficiency anaemia appear. With an iron deficiency, the body is unable to provide enough iron for the formation of haemoglobin in the red blood cells, which can lead to symptoms such as tiredness, paleness, headaches and weakness.If iron deficiency is suspected, ferritin levels are often measured to determine how much iron is stored in the body.
In addition to ferritin, the protein lactoferrin also plays an important role in the body's iron supply. Lactoferrin binds iron and supports its transport and absorption in the intestine. It promotes the bioavailability of iron and helps to protect it from harmful microbes that require iron for their growth. Lactoferrin therefore not only has an antimicrobial effect, but also helps to optimise iron absorption from food, especially in people who have difficulty absorbing iron efficiently from plant sources.
