Things worth knowing about "Ferritin"

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body and releases it when it is needed. It plays a crucial role in iron metabolism and is mainly found in the liver, spleen and bone marrow.

The ferritin level in the blood is a reliable indicator of the amount of stored iron in the body and is often used to determine a person's iron status. A low ferritin level indicates an iron deficiency, even if the haemoglobin level is still normal. This means that although the body still has enough iron to support the formation of red blood cells, the iron stores are already depleted. This can be an early warning sign of iron deficiency anaemia. Typical symptoms of a low ferritin level are tiredness, weakness, brittle nails and hair loss.

In contrast, an elevated ferritin level can indicate iron overload (haemochromatosis), inflammatory diseases or liver problems. As ferritin is an acute phase protein, it can also rise in the event of infections or inflammation, which can influence the interpretation of ferritin levels.

Determining the ferritin level in the blood is therefore an important test for monitoring the iron balance in the body and recognising and treating possible deficiencies or overloads at an early stage.
