Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder characterised by widespread muscle and joint pain, exhaustion (fatigue) and increased sensitivity to pain.

In addition, accompanying symptoms such as sleep disorders, concentration problems (""fibro-fog""), headaches and gastrointestinal complaints such as irritable bowel syndrome often occur. The exact cause of the disease is still unclear, but experts suspect a dysregulation of the central nervous system, which influences pain processing and stress management. Fibromyalgia mainly affects women, but can also affect men and children. The symptoms of fibromyalgia can be exacerbated by concomitant illnesses or deficiencies. An iron deficiency, for example, which is associated with increased fatigue and weakness, can further increase the burden on those affected. 

In this context, lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein, could be important. It promotes iron absorption in the intestine and also has an anti-inflammatory effect. This could be supportive, as fibromyalgia is often associated with inflammatory processes and a sensitive immune system.

The diagnosis is made by exclusion, as no specific tests exist. Doctors check the patient's medical history, symptoms and pressure-sensitive areas of the body (tender points). Treatment is individualised and aims to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. Recommended measures include moderate exercise such as swimming or yoga, relaxation techniques and physical therapies. Medication such as painkillers, antidepressants or sleeping pills can also be used. Diet also plays a role in symptom control. A balanced diet with sufficient iron, supported by food supplements containing lactoferrin, can help to stabilise the energy balance and reduce inflammation-related symptoms.
