Things worth knowing about "Freezing baby food"

Freezing baby food is a safe and practical way to preserve homemade purees for infants. It saves parents time while ensuring a healthy, nutrient-rich diet for their baby.

What does freezing baby food mean?

Freezing baby food is a convenient and safe method for preserving homemade meals for infants and toddlers over a longer period. Instead of cooking fresh every day, parents can prepare larger batches of baby puree at once and freeze them in individual portions. This saves time and ensures a balanced, nutrient-rich diet for the baby.

Which foods can be frozen?

Most homemade baby purees are suitable for freezing. These include:

  • Vegetable purees (e.g. carrots, parsnips, zucchini, peas)
  • Fruit purees (e.g. apple, pear, mango – note that texture may change slightly after thawing)
  • Meat and vegetable purees with potatoes or other starchy ingredients
  • Legume purees (e.g. lentils, peas)
  • Fish purees (well cooked and finely blended)

Foods less suitable for freezing include purees with a high cream or yogurt content, as well as raw banana, which tends to turn brown and develop an unpleasant texture after thawing.

Freezing safely: step by step

Hygiene first

Before preparing and freezing baby food, hands, work surfaces, and all kitchen utensils must be thoroughly cleaned. Hygiene is especially important when handling baby food, as an infant's immune system is not yet fully developed.

Cool before freezing

Freshly cooked baby puree should be completely cooled before freezing. The quickest way is to cool it in a cold water bath or in the refrigerator. Never place hot food directly in the freezer, as this raises the temperature inside and can affect other stored foods.

Portioning and packaging

The best method for freezing is to use silicone ice cube trays or dedicated baby food containers. This allows individual portions (usually 60–120 ml) to be removed easily. Once frozen, the portions can be transferred to resealable freezer bags or containers. Always label with the date and contents to keep track of what is stored.

Storage duration in the freezer

Homemade baby puree can generally be stored at –18 °C for up to 3 months. For optimal quality and nutrient retention, it is recommended to use the puree within 4 to 6 weeks.

Thawing and reheating baby food

Frozen baby food should always be thawed and reheated safely:

  • Thawing overnight in the refrigerator is the gentlest method.
  • Alternatively, the frozen puree can be thawed in a warm water bath.
  • Thawing in a microwave is possible, but hot spots can develop – always stir well and check the temperature before serving.
  • Thawed baby food should not be refrozen.
  • Reheated meals should be consumed within 2 hours.

Freezing commercial baby food

Commercially produced baby food in jars should generally not be frozen, as this can alter the texture and nutrient content. Leftover food from opened jars should be discarded or stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours.

Benefits of freezing baby food

  • Time-saving: Prepare large batches at once and store for later use.
  • Cost-effective: Buy seasonal fruit and vegetables at a lower price and freeze them.
  • Nutrient preservation: Frozen vegetables retain a large proportion of their vitamins and minerals.
  • Flexibility: Always have a healthy meal ready for your baby.
