Eine Stirnhöhlenentzündung (Frontalsinusitis) ist eine Form der Nasennebenhöhlenentzündung, bei der die Stirnhöhlen oberhalb der Augen betroffen sind.
Die Stirnhöhlenentzündung entsteht meist infolge eines grippalen Infekts oder einer Erkältung, wenn die Schleimhäute anschwellen und der natürliche Abfluss des Schleims behindert wird. Dadurch können sich Sekrete stauen und Entzündungsprozesse entwickeln, die sowohl akut als auch chronisch verlaufen können.
Typisch für eine Stirnhöhlenentzündung sind druckartige oder pochende Schmerzen im Stirnbereich, die sich beim Vorbeugen, Husten oder Niesen verstärken. Häufig treten zusätzlich Kopfschmerzen, verstopfte Nase, eitriger Nasenausfluss, Geruchsverlust sowie ein allgemeines Krankheitsgefühl auf. Bei bakteriellen Verläufen kann auch Fieber hinzukommen. Bleibt die Entzündung unbehandelt, kann sie sich ausbreiten und in seltenen Fällen zu Komplikationen führen.
Die Behandlung richtet sich nach Ursache und Schweregrad. Bei viralen Verläufen stehen abschwellende Maßnahmen, Inhalationen, ausreichende Flüssigkeitszufuhr und Ruhe im Vordergrund. Bei bakteriellen Infektionen kann eine antibiotische Therapie notwendig sein. Zur Vorbeugung sind eine gute Nasenschleimhautpflege, rechtzeitige Behandlung von Erkältungen und das Meiden von Rauch oder trockener Luft sinnvoll.
