There are various categories of functional tests depending on the organ or system being examined:
Pulmonary function tests, also known as spirometry, measure breathing capacity and airflow in the airways. They are used to diagnose conditions such as asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and pulmonary fibrosis.
Liver function tests are blood tests that measure enzymes and proteins produced by the liver.
