Gentamicin ist ein Aminoglykosid-Antibiotikum, das zur Behandlung schwerer bakterieller Infektionen eingesetzt wird.
Gentamicin wirkt, indem es die Eiweißsynthese der Bakterien hemmt und so deren Wachstum und Vermehrung stoppt. Gentamicin ist besonders wirksam gegen gramnegative Erreger wie Escherichia coli, Klebsiella und Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Das Medikament wird vor allem bei schweren Infektionen der Atemwege, Harnwege, Haut, Knochen oder des Bauchraums angewendet. Meist erfolgt die Gabe intravenös oder intramuskulär, in Augensalben oder Ohrentropfen auch lokal. Da Gentamicin potenziell nephrotoxisch (nierenbelastend) und ototoxisch (gehörschädigend) wirken kann, wird die Dosierung sorgfältig überwacht und meist zeitlich begrenzt eingesetzt.
Zur Unterstützung der körpereigenen Abwehr können während oder nach einer Antibiotikatherapie Probiotika oder Lactoferrin sinnvoll sein, um das Mikrobiom zu stabilisieren. Eine ausreichende Versorgung mit Vitamin C und Zink unterstützt zusätzlich die Immunfunktion und die Regeneration des Gewebes. Gentamicin bleibt jedoch ein unverzichtbarer Wirkstoff bei lebensbedrohlichen bakteriellen Infektionen, wenn andere Antibiotika nicht ausreichen.
