Gingivitis is the superficial inflammation of the gums (gingiva), which is usually caused by bacterial plaque deposits at the gum line.
Gingivitis is one of the most common diseases of the oral cavity and is usually reversible if it is recognised and treated early. It is usually triggered by inadequate oral hygiene, which causes plaque and tartar to accumulate and trigger an inflammatory reaction in the gums. Other favouring factors are hormonal fluctuations, diabetes, smoking, certain medications or vitamin deficiency (e.g. vitamin C).
Typical symptoms are reddened, swollen and slightly bleeding gums, especially when brushing teeth or touching them. In many cases, gingivitis is painless, which means that it is often overlooked. However, if it is not treated, it can develop into periodontitis - a deeper inflammation that affects the entire periodontium and can lead to gum recession, tooth loosening and ultimately tooth loss.
The key difference between gingivitis and periodontitis lies in the extent of the inflammation: While gingivitis is limited to the gums and is usually completely curable,periodontitis affects the deeper structures.spreads to the deeper structures - including connective tissue and jawbone - and is usually irreversible, but its progression can be halted.
The treatment of gingivitis primarily involves thorough dental care, regular professional dental cleaning(PZR), theavoidance of factors that promote inflammationand, if necessary the use of antibacterial mouthwashes. Integrative dentistry also uses natural active ingredients such as lactoferrin, which can help restore oral health thanks to its antimicrobial and inflammation-regulating properties.
