Das Glaukom, umgangssprachlich als grüner Star bekannt, ist eine chronische Augenerkrankung, bei der es zu einer fortschreitenden Schädigung des Sehnervs kommt.
Ein erhöhter Augeninnendruck ist häufig mitverantwortlich für den Grünen Star – jedoch können auch Normaldruck-Glaukome auftreten. Wenn die Erkrankung unbehandelt bleibt, kann dies zur irreversiblen Erblindung führen.
Die Erkrankung entwickelt sich meist schleichend und schmerzfrei, was sie besonders tückisch macht. Erste Symptome wie Gesichtsfeldausfälle, verschwommenes Sehen oder Lichtkränze um Lichtquellen treten oft erst im fortgeschrittenen Stadium auf. Risikofaktoren sind höheres Alter, familiäre Vorbelastung, Diabetes, niedriger Blutdruck und Kurzsichtigkeit.
Zur Behandlung stehen Augentropfen, Lasertherapien oder operative Verfahren zur Senkung des Augendrucks zur Verfügung. Wichtig ist die frühe Diagnose durch regelmäßige Augenuntersuchungen, vor allem ab dem 40. Lebensjahr. Ein früh entdecktes Glaukom kann oft stabilisiert werden, um den Sehverlust zu begrenzen.
