Selenium

Selenium is an essential trace element that plays a central role in thyroid function. It is involved in converting the thyroid hormone T4 into its active form T3 and has powerful antioxidant properties. Clinical studies indicate that adequate selenium intake may reduce TPO antibody levels (thyroid peroxidase antibodies). Good dietary sources include Brazil nuts, seafood, meat, and eggs.

Iodine

Iodine is a fundamental building block of thyroid hormones.   • Soy products: May interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormone medication (levothyroxine) if consumed close to the time of medication intake.
  • Highly processed foods: Often contain additives, trans fats, and refined sugars that can promote inflammation.
  • Alcohol: May negatively affect thyroid function and immune regulation.

Gut Health and Hashimoto

A healthy gut microbiome plays an important role in immune system regulation. Since Hashimoto is an autoimmune disease, gut health may influence the course of the condition. A fiber-rich diet including fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi can positively support gut flora and contribute to balanced immune responses.
