Things worth knowing about "HbA1c"

An elevated HbA1c value indicates a long-term elevated blood glucose concentration, which increases the risk of diabetic complications such as nerve damage, kidney problems or cardiovascular diseases.

The HbA1c value, also known as the long-term blood glucose, indicates the average blood glucose level over the last 8 to 12 weeks. HbA1c stands for glycated haemoglobin, i.e. the proportion of red blood pigment (haemoglobin) that has been chemically altered by sugar in the blood. The value is particularly important for the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes mellitus, as it detects long-term blood glucose fluctuations better than a single blood glucose measurement.

The HbA1c values are given in per cent (%) or mmol/mol. The following guide values are used for classification:

  • Healthy range: < 5.7 % (39 mmol/mol)
  • Prediabetes: 5.7 - 6.4 % (39 - 47 mmol/mol)
  • Diabetes mellitus: ≥ 6.5 % (≥ 48 mmol/mol)
  • Well-controlled diabetes: < 7.0% (53 mmol/mol)

An elevated HbA1c level indicates a long-term elevated blood glucose concentration, which increases the risk of diabetic complications such as nerve damage, kidney problems or cardiovascular diseases. A change in diet, exercise and stable blood glucose control help to lower the value.

Natural measures for HbA1c optimisation include a high-fibre diet, a reduction in fast-digesting carbohydrates and regular exercise. Antioxidants such as polyphenols, omega-3 fatty acids and micronutrients such as magnesium and zinc support insulin sensitivity.

Regular monitoring of HbA1c levels is essential, especially for diabetics, people with metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance, in order to avoid long-term health complications and keep the metabolism stable.
