Things worth knowing about "Heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias)"
Cardiac arrhythmias are irregularities of the heartbeat, which can manifest themselves as too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia) or irregular heartbeat.
Cardiac arrhythmias are caused by faulty electrical signal transmission in the heart and can be harmless or life-threatening. While occasional heart stumbles are usually harmless, persistent arrhythmias can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure or sudden cardiac death.
The causes of cardiac arrhythmias are varied and range from stress, excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, lack of sleep and electrolyte imbalances to serious heart conditions such as coronary heart disease (CHD), high blood pressure or heart muscle disease. A lack of important minerals and vitamins, in particular magnesium, potassium and coenzyme Q10, can also affect the electrical activity of the heart.
Symptoms vary depending on the type of cardiac arrhythmia and can include palpitations, palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain or fainting spells. However, some people do not even notice their cardiac arrhythmia and are only discovered by chance during a medical examination. Mild cardiac arrhythmias often require no treatment, while more severe cases are treated with medication (antiarrhythmic drugs, beta blockers), surgery or with a pacemaker or defibrillator. In addition, a healthy lifestyle, stress reduction and an adequate supply of magnesium, potassium or coenzyme Q10 can help to stabilise the heart and reduce the risk of arrhythmia.
