Things worth knowing about "Heartburn (pyrosis)"

Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone caused by the reflux of stomach acid into the oesophagus.

Sodburn often occurs after eating or when lying down and can be accompanied by a sour taste in the mouth, burping and a feeling of pressure in the upper abdomen.

The cause of heartburn is usually a weakness in the lower oesophageal sphincter, which normally prevents stomach acid from rising into the oesophagus. Risk factors include fatty or spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, being overweight, stress and certain medications. Pregnancy can also favour heartburn due to the increased pressure on the stomach.

For occasional heartburn, home remedies such as camomile tea, ginger or oatmeal can help. A change in diet, smaller meals and avoiding eating late at night can also alleviate the symptoms. With frequent or severe heartburn, there is a risk of reflux disease, which can damage the oesophagus in the long term and lead to inflammation or ulcers.

In addition to acid blockers (proton pump inhibitors) and antacids, which neutralise stomach acid, certain nutrients can also have a supportive effect. Zinc can help to protect the mucous membrane and promote wound healing. Lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein, is also associated with the health of the gastrointestinal mucosa due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It supports the regeneration of the gastric and oesophageal mucosa and can help to stabilise the gastric environment. Thanks to its antimicrobial effect, it can also inhibit the growth of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that favours gastric mucosal inflammation. These properties make lactoferrin a natural supporter of stomach and intestinal health.
