Heptylparaben (E209) is the only paraben-based preservative approved in the European Union, specifically authorized for use in certain foods such as alcoholic beverages and crustacean preparations. It inhibits the growth of molds and yeasts. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has established an ADI (acceptable daily intake) for heptylparaben of 0–0.5 mg per kg of body weight.
