Wissenswertes über "Histamine intolerance"
Histamine intolerance is a food intolerance in which the body absorbs too much histamine or cannot break it down sufficiently.
Histamine intolerance is a food intolerance in which the body absorbs too much histamine or is unable to break it down sufficiently. Histamine is an endogenous messenger substance that plays a role in allergic reactions, immune defence and the regulation of the gastrointestinal tract, among other things. Normally, histamine is broken down by the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO). However, in the case of histamine intolerance, DAO activity is reduced so that histamine accumulates in the body and triggers symptoms.
The symptoms are varied and can be confused with allergic reactions. Common symptoms include reddening of the skin, itching or hives, headaches, migraines, gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, flatulence or diarrhoea, cardiovascular complaints such as dizziness or palpitations, respiratory complaints such as nasal congestion or asthma-like symptoms.
Histamine intolerance can be caused by a genetically determined DAO weakness, intestinal problems (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut) or certain medications that inhibit DAO activity. There are also many histamine-rich foods that exacerbate symptoms, including mature cheese, cured meats, sauerkraut, alcohol, tomatoes, aubergines and spinach.
The most important measure is a low-histamine diet. Those affected should avoid histamine-rich foods and favour fresh, unprocessed foods. In addition, taking DAO enzyme supplements can help to break down histamine better. Certain nutrients can also have a supportive effect: vitamin B6 is essential for DAO activity and can help to improve histamine tolerance. Vitamin C also plays an important role, as it breaks down histamine in the body and can therefore alleviate symptoms.
