Human metapneumovirus (HMPV, sometimes also called HPMV) is a newly discovered viral pathogen characterised by its high mutation rate and adaptability.
The high mutation rate and adaptability of the virus enables it to adapt quickly to different host conditions and immune defence mechanisms, making it a particular challenge for the healthcare system. HMPV is mainly transmitted by droplet infection and direct contact and can show both acute and chronic courses.
The symptoms of an infection vary greatly and range from flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough and exhaustion to severe systemic illnesses, which can be life-threatening. People with weakened immune systems and chronic illnesses in particular are considered a risk group.
A key approach to supporting the immune system in dealing with HMPV is the use of lactoferrin. This iron-binding glycoprotein has been shown to have antiviral properties and can inhibit viral replication through its ability to bind free iron ions. In addition, lactoferrin modulates the immune response and protects mucous membranes, making it a potential adjuvant in the prevention and treatment of HMPV infections.
Research on HMPV and potential therapeutic interventions, including the use of lactoferrin, is currently at an early stage. International scientists and health authorities are working hard to develop effective strategies to combat this highly dynamic virus.
