Homeopathy is an alternative medical treatment method based on the principles of the German doctor Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843).
The basic principle of homeopathy is "similia similibus curentur" ("similar things are cured by similar things"), i.e. a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person is used in a highly diluted form to treat the same symptoms.
Homeopathic medicines are produced by potentisation (dilution and shaking). The active ingredient is gradually diluted with water or alcohol and shaken vigorously after each dilution step. The resulting dilutions are often so high that no detectable molecule of the original substance is left. Proponents argue that the liquid stores an "energy" or "information" of the active ingredient, which is said to have a healing effect on the body.
In practice, homeopathic remedies are used for a variety of complaints, including colds, sleep disorders, digestive problems and mental disorders. Homeopathy is very popular as a complement to conventional medicine. In many countries, it is sold in pharmacies and prescribed by health practitioners or homeopathic doctors. Many people use homeopathic remedies as a gentle alternative or supplement to conventional medicine with few side effects. The individualised approach to the patient, the activation of self-healing powers and the holistic approach of this healing method can have a positive effect on well-being. Homeopathy is also frequently used in combination with conventional treatments, particularly in complementary medicine.
