Things worth knowing about "HRT - Hormone Replacement Therapy"

Hormone replacement therapy helps alleviate menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and sleep disturbances. Learn more about its effects, risks, and types.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a medical treatment that supplies the body with estrogen, progesterone, and in some cases, testosterone, to alleviate the effects of hormonal decline, particularly during the menopause. It is primarily used to treat symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and vaginal dryness. In some cases, HRT is also used to improve bone density and cardiovascular health.

There are different forms of HRT, including oral tablets, patches, gels, and injections. Progesterone is typically used in combination with estrogen to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy uses hormones that are chemically identical to those produced by the body.

The treatment should be tailored individually, as HRT carries certain risks, such as an increased risk of breast cancer, blood clots, or cardiovascular disease with long-term use. Therefore, it is typically recommended for short-term use and under medical supervision.

Indications for HRT:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse
  • Osteoporosis prevention
  • Reduction of mood swings and irritability

Forms of HRT:

  • Estrogen-only therapy (for women without a uterus)
  • Combined estrogen and progesterone therapy (for women with a uterus)
  • Bioidentical hormone therapy
  • Transdermal hormone patches or gels
