Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, bronchiolitis or pneumonia, particularly in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is an RNA virus belonging to the family Pneumoviridae, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001. It is one of the leading causes of acute respiratory tract infections worldwide and is closely related to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). hMPV circulates globally, with peak activity during the winter and early spring months.
hMPV is primarily spread through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Transmission via contaminated surfaces (contact transmission) is also possible. The virus infects the mucous membranes of both the upper and lower respiratory tract.
Individuals at higher risk of severe illness include:
Symptoms of an hMPV infection resemble those of the common cold or influenza and can range from mild to severe:
The incubation period is typically 3 to 6 days. Most healthy adults recover fully within 1 to 2 weeks.
Diagnosis of an hMPV infection is typically made using the following methods:
In clinical settings, hMPV is frequently detected as part of multiplex respiratory panels that can simultaneously identify multiple respiratory pathogens.
Currently, there is no specific antiviral therapy available for Human Metapneumovirus. Treatment is therefore symptomatic and supportive:
As of 2025, no licensed vaccine against hMPV is available, although several candidates are in clinical development.
Since no vaccine is currently available, general hygiene measures are especially important:
