It is a controlled substance and requires a prescription in most countries.

Mechanism of Action

Additionally, it activates descending pain-modulatory pathways, further reducing the perception of pain. Dosage Forms and Administration
Hydromorphone is available in several formulations:

- Immediate-release capsules for acute or breakthrough pain
- Injectable solutions for intravenous or subcutaneous administration
- Suppositories as an alternative for patients with swallowing difficulties

Side Effects
Like all opioids, hydromorphone can cause unwanted effects. The most common include:
