Things worth knowing about "Hypoglycaemia"

Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) occurs when the blood sugar level falls below the normal range of around 70 mg/dl (3.9 mmol/l).

Glucose is the body's main source of energy and is particularly important for the function of the brain. Low blood glucose levels can therefore lead to a variety of physical and neurological symptoms.

Typical symptoms of hypoglycaemia are trembling, sweating, heart palpitations, feeling weak, dizziness, hot hunger and internal restlessness. In more severe hypoglycaemia, concentration disorders, confusion, speech problems, visual disturbances or coordination difficulties may also occur. In severe cases, seizures, unconsciousness or even hypoglycaemic shock may occur.

The most common causes of hypoglycaemia are an imbalance between the blood glucose level and the blood sugar level./b>insulin, food intake and physical activity. People with diabetes who take insulin or blood sugar-lowering medication are particularly at risk. However, prolonged periods of fasting, intense physical exertion, an unbalanced diet with too many simple carbohydrates or alcohol can also lead to severe blood sugar fluctuations. More rarely, hormonal disorders or liver disease can cause hypoglycaemia.

The rapid treatment of acute hypoglycaemia requires a rapid intake of readily available carbohydrates. For example, glucose, fruit juice or a spoonful of honey are recommended. In cases of severe hypoglycaemia, a glucagon injection may be necessary, especially in diabetics. To prevent hypoglycaemia in the long term, it is crucial to keep blood sugar stable. A diet with complex carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats prevents major fluctuations

.

Magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants can help to stabilise blood sugar regulation. Conscious food intake, regular exercise and avoiding excessive sugar consumption help to prevent hypoglycaemia and severe fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
