Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. The two main hormones – thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) – regulate metabolism, body temperature, and many other vital functions. A deficiency causes many bodily processes to slow down, resulting in a wide range of symptoms that can significantly affect quality of life.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism tend to develop gradually and can be easily mistaken for other conditions. The most frequent signs include:
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is the autoimmune disease Hashimoto thyroiditis, in which the immune system attacks and damages the thyroid gland. Other possible causes include:
If several of the symptoms listed above occur simultaneously and persist over a longer period, it is important to consult a doctor. Early evaluation is especially important in the following situations:
Hypothyroidism is primarily diagnosed through a blood test. The most important laboratory value is the TSH level (thyroid-stimulating hormone). An elevated TSH level indicates that the thyroid is not producing enough hormones. Free thyroid hormones fT3 and fT4, as well as antibodies (e.g., TPO antibodies when Hashimoto thyroiditis is suspected), are also commonly measured.
The standard treatment for hypothyroidism is the daily intake of levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone that replaces the missing T4. The dosage is individually adjusted and regularly monitored through blood tests. With consistent treatment, most symptoms can be significantly improved or completely resolved.
