Things worth knowing about "Iris Diagnosis"

Iris diagnosis (iridology) is an alternative medicine method in which the iris of the eye is examined to draw conclusions about a person's state of health.

What is Iris Diagnosis?

Iris diagnosis, also known as iridology or iridodiagnosis, is an alternative medicine examination method. The iris (the coloured part of the eye) is observed with the naked eye or with the help of optical instruments such as a magnifying glass or iridoscope. Proponents of this method believe that specific zones, structures, discolourations, and patterns in the iris can provide information about the condition of internal organs and the general state of health of an individual.

History and Origin

The roots of iris diagnosis date back to the 19th century. The method is widely attributed to the Hungarian physician Ignaz von Peczely, who published early iris charts in the 1860s. It was later further developed and popularised by German naturopath Theodor Kriege and other practitioners of natural medicine. Since then, it has been applied within various naturopathic and complementary medicine communities.

How Does Iris Diagnosis Work?

Practitioners of iridology use so-called iris charts (iridology schemas), which divide the iris into different zones. Each zone is said to correspond to a specific organ or area of the body. The following features are typically assessed:

  • Discolourations of the iris (light or dark spots)
  • Structural changes such as fibre patterns, cracks, or densities
  • Pigment deposits and colour variations
  • Constitutional signs said to indicate overall body constitution

The examination is painless and non-invasive. It is commonly performed as part of a naturopathic or alternative medicine consultation.

Scientific Evaluation

From a scientific and conventional medical perspective, iris diagnosis is not recognised as a valid diagnostic method. Numerous clinical studies have failed to demonstrate a reliable connection between iris characteristics and the condition of internal organs or the presence of disease. Critics point out that:

  • the diagnostic accuracy does not exceed chance levels,
  • different iridologists examining the same iris reach different conclusions,
  • there is no biologically plausible explanation for the assumed link between the iris and organ condition.

Iris diagnosis is therefore considered a pseudodiagnostic method in evidence-based medicine, with no proven clinical validity.

Risks and Considerations

Although the examination itself is harmless, there are indirect risks. If patients forgo conventional medical examinations or necessary treatments based on an iris diagnosis, this can lead to a delay in correct diagnosis and appropriate therapy. People experiencing health complaints should always consult a licensed physician and not rely solely on alternative medicine methods.

Distinction from Ophthalmological Diagnostics

Iris diagnosis must be clearly distinguished from conventional ophthalmology. In ophthalmology, changes in the iris are indeed used within recognised diagnostic procedures to identify certain eye conditions, for example in the diagnosis of iritis (inflammation of the iris) or certain systemic diseases such as Marfan syndrome. These procedures are based on scientifically validated anatomical and physiological relationships.
