Iyengar Yoga is a globally practiced style of yoga developed in the 1960s by the Indian yoga master Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar (B.K.S. Iyengar). At its core is the precise physical alignment of each yoga posture (asana). Unlike many other yoga styles, Iyengar Yoga places particular emphasis on exactness, patience, and the gradual deepening of practice. The system is standardized worldwide and taught exclusively by certified instructors.
B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014) was a student of the legendary yoga teacher T. Krishnamacharya. Over several decades, he developed a detailed system that combines the classical yoga of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras with a modern anatomical understanding. His 1966 book Light on Yoga remains a foundational reference in modern yoga literature. In 2014, B.K.S. Iyengar was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors.
Iyengar Yoga is distinguished from other yoga styles by several defining characteristics:
Iyengar Yoga is well recognized for its therapeutic effectiveness and is used to address a wide range of conditions, including:
The systematic use of props makes it possible for people with limited mobility, older adults, and those with chronic conditions to participate safely and effectively.
Several clinical studies and systematic reviews have documented the positive health effects of Iyengar Yoga. Well-supported benefits include:
An Iyengar Yoga class typically begins with simpler standing and warm-up postures, followed by a structured sequence of standing poses, forward bends, backbends, or inversions, depending on the teaching focus and level of the group. Classes usually conclude with the relaxation posture Savasana. Teachers provide precise verbal and hands-on corrections to support individual students.
The training to become an Iyengar Yoga teacher is among the most rigorous in the yoga world. It spans several years and includes intensive practical and theoretical study. Certifications are granted by official national and international Iyengar Yoga associations affiliated with the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India.
