Laparoscopy (also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery) is a surgical technique that allows surgeons to examine or operate inside the abdominal cavity through small incisions, typically 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters in length. A thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera – called a laparoscope – is inserted through one of these incisions, providing a live video feed of the internal organs on a monitor. This approach is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
At the start of the procedure, the abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide gas (CO₂) to create space and improve visibility. The laparoscope is then inserted through a small incision near the navel. The camera transmits high-definition images to a monitor, allowing the surgical team to navigate and operate with precision. Additional small incisions may be made to insert specialized surgical instruments when treatment is required.

Laparoscopy is typically performed under general anesthesia. Pre-operative preparation usually includes blood tests, an ECG, and fasting for at least six hours before the procedure. Following a laparoscopy, patients typically remain in hospital for a few hours to several days depending on the type of procedure performed. Mild discomfort, bloating from the CO₂ gas, and a feeling of fullness are common in the first few days. Physical rest and avoidance of heavy lifting are recommended for one to two weeks. Follow-up appointments with the treating physician are an essential part of recovery.
