What is Lasea?

Lasea is a prescription herbal medicinal product containing the active ingredient Silexan – a specially produced lavender oil derived from Lavandula angustifolia. It is available as soft capsules of 80 mg each and is approved for the treatment of restlessness and anxious mood in adults.

Active Ingredient and Mechanism of Action

The active substance in Lasea is Silexan, a patented essential lavender oil. Unlike conventional sedatives or anxiolytics, Silexan does not carry the typical risks of dependency or excessive sedation.

Inhibition of voltage-gated calcium channels: Silexan modulates calcium channel activity in nerve cells, reducing excessive neuronal excitability.
Modulation of neurotransmitters: Evidence suggests interaction with serotonergic and GABAergic systems, contributing to its anxiolytic effects.
No anticholinergic or sedative effects at therapeutic doses.

Indications

Lasea is approved for adults experiencing anxious mood and inner restlessness, also referred to as subsyndromal anxiety. Typical conditions in which Lasea is used include:

Nervousness and tension
Difficulty falling asleep due to worry or restlessness
Mild to moderate anxiety symptoms without a diagnosed anxiety disorder

Dosage and Administration

The recommended dose is 1 capsule (80 mg) once daily, preferably at the same time each day, for example in the morning or evening, taken with sufficient liquid. Capsules should be swallowed whole. An initial effect is typically noticeable after 2 to 4 weeks. The usual duration of treatment is 6 to 10 weeks.

Side Effects

Lasea is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported side effect is a lavender taste or odour in the mouth or when burping. Other possible side effects include:

Nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort (rare)
Headache (rare)

No evidence of dependency potential or clinically relevant drug interactions has been reported. However, use should be discussed with a healthcare professional, particularly when taken alongside other sedatives or sleep aids.

Contraindications and Precautions

Not suitable for children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
Use with caution in individuals with known hypersensitivity to lavender oil or any of the excipients.
Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been sufficiently established; use only after medical consultation.

Scientific Evidence

The efficacy of Silexan (Lasea) has been investigated in several clinical trials. Randomised, placebo-controlled studies have demonstrated a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms compared to placebo. Silexan has also been compared to the benzodiazepine lorazepam and shown comparable anxiolytic efficacy without the risk of dependence. Lasea is therefore considered a recognised herbal alternative for mild to moderate anxiety symptoms.
