Things worth knowing about "Lowering Blood Sugar"

Lowering blood sugar refers to measures that reduce elevated glucose levels in the blood. This is especially important in diabetes mellitus to prevent long-term complications.

What Does Lowering Blood Sugar Mean?

Lowering blood sugar refers to all medical and lifestyle-related measures that help normalize elevated blood glucose levels. Persistently high blood sugar, also known as hyperglycemia, can lead to serious health complications, including damage to the kidneys, eyes, nerves, and cardiovascular system. Regulating blood sugar is therefore a central goal in the management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Causes of Elevated Blood Sugar

Elevated blood sugar can have several causes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas leads to an absolute lack of insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Insulin resistance of body cells combined with a relative lack of insulin is the most common cause.
  • Dietary Habits: A diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates causes rapid spikes in blood glucose.
  • Physical Inactivity: Lack of exercise reduces the insulin sensitivity of muscle cells.
  • Stress: Stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline can raise blood sugar levels.
  • Certain Medications: Corticosteroids, diuretics, and other drugs can raise blood sugar as a side effect.

Symptoms of Elevated Blood Sugar

Common signs of hyperglycemia include:

  • Excessive thirst (polydipsia)
  • Frequent urination (polyuria)
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow wound healing
  • Difficulty concentrating

Methods for Lowering Blood Sugar

Diet

A carbohydrate-conscious diet is one of the most effective ways to lower blood sugar. Foods with a low glycemic index (GI), such as legumes, whole grains, vegetables, and nuts, cause a slower rise in blood glucose. Sugar, white flour products, and sugary drinks should be reduced. A fiber-rich diet slows the absorption of glucose in the intestine.

Physical Activity

Regular physical exercise increases insulin sensitivity and promotes the uptake of glucose into muscle cells, even without insulin. Just 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per day (e.g., walking, cycling, swimming) can measurably lower blood sugar levels.

Medication

When diet and exercise are not sufficient, various antidiabetic medications are available:

  • Metformin: First-line treatment for type 2 diabetes; reduces glucose production in the liver.
  • Sulfonylureas: Stimulate insulin secretion from the pancreas.
  • SGLT-2 inhibitors: Promote the excretion of glucose through the urine.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists: Increase insulin release and reduce appetite.
  • Insulin: Essential for type 1 diabetes and advanced type 2 diabetes.

Stress Management and Sleep

Chronic stress and lack of sleep increase stress hormone levels and consequently raise blood sugar. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation, along with adequate sleep (7 to 9 hours), help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Diagnosis and Target Values

Blood sugar is measured through several tests:

  • Fasting blood glucose: Normal value below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L)
  • HbA1c value: Long-term blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months; target for diabetic patients is usually below 7% (53 mmol/mol)
  • Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT): Measures the blood sugar response to a defined amount of glucose

In patients with known diabetes, individual target values should be established together with the treating physician, as age, comorbidities, and medications all play a role.

When to See a Doctor?

If blood sugar levels remain persistently elevated or symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained fatigue occur, a doctor should be consulted promptly. Untreated high blood sugar can lead to a diabetic coma or long-term organ damage.
