Macronutrient analysis is a nutritional assessment method used to determine the quantities of the three primary energy-providing nutrients in food or meals: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats (lipids). These three nutrient groups are referred to as macronutrients because they are consumed in relatively large amounts and supply the majority of the energy the human body requires for daily function.

Carbohydrates are the body´s primary energy source, providing 4 kilocalories (kcal) per gram. They occur in foods as sugars, starches, and dietary fiber.
