Things worth knowing about "Magnetic Field Therapy"

Magnetic field therapy is a physical treatment method in which electromagnetic fields are applied to the body to promote healing processes and relieve pain.

What is Magnetic Field Therapy?

Magnetic field therapy is a physical treatment approach in which pulsed or static electromagnetic fields are applied to the human body. The goal is to stimulate biological processes in the tissue, thereby reducing pain and supporting the body´s natural healing mechanisms. It is used in both conventional and complementary medicine and is well established in various areas of rehabilitation and orthopedics.

Mechanism of Action

Magnetic fields act on electrically charged particles within the body. At the cellular level, it is believed that electromagnetic fields influence ion channels in cell membranes, thereby stimulating cellular metabolism. The following effects have been proposed:

  • Improvement of blood circulation and microcirculation
  • Stimulation of cell regeneration and tissue repair
  • Reduction of inflammatory processes
  • Pain relief through modulation of nerve signals
  • Promotion of bone metabolism (osteoblast activation)

Indications and Areas of Application

Magnetic field therapy is used for a wide range of complaints and conditions. The most common indications include:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders: osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, back pain, herniated discs
  • Bone fractures: support of bone healing, especially in delayed union (non-union fractures)
  • Sports injuries: ligament and muscle strains, tendon inflammation
  • Chronic pain: fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain
  • Wound healing: chronic wounds, pressure ulcers
  • Neurological applications: repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for depression

Types of Magnetic Field Therapy

Low-Frequency Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF)

The most widely used form is pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF). Weak, low-frequency magnetic fields are delivered to the body in the form of pulses. Devices range from large treatment mats to small, portable units for home use.

High-Energy Magnetic Field Therapy

This variant uses stronger magnetic fields capable of reaching deeper tissue layers. It is primarily applied in specialist clinics and practices for chronic pain and joint conditions.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a specialized medical application in which strong magnetic fields are used to stimulate specific areas of the brain. It is a recognized treatment for treatment-resistant depression and is used in the field of neurology.

Treatment Procedure

The procedure varies depending on the type of application and the indication. Typically, the patient lies on a therapy mat or the affected body part is placed within a coil applicator. Treatment sessions usually last between 15 and 30 minutes, and a full course of therapy often consists of 10 to 20 sessions. The therapy is generally painless and is perceived as pleasant by most patients.

Scientific Evidence

The scientific evidence for magnetic field therapy varies depending on the indication. Well-supported evidence exists for:

  • Non-union fractures (pseudarthroses): positive study data, recommended in clinical guidelines
  • Depression (TMS): approved by several health authorities and clinically recognized

For other indications such as osteoarthritis or chronic back pain, positive study results have been reported; however, the level of evidence is still considered insufficient by some medical societies. Further high-quality clinical trials are needed in these areas.

Contraindications and Safety

Magnetic field therapy is generally considered a safe method with few side effects. However, there are specific situations in which it should not be used:

  • Patients with cardiac pacemakers or implanted defibrillators
  • Patients with certain metal implants (e.g., cochlear implants)
  • Pregnancy (especially during the first trimester)
  • Active malignant tumors (avoid application in the tumor region)
  • Epilepsy (especially with TMS)
