Heilpflanzen sind Pflanzen oder Pflanzenteile, die aufgrund ihrer Inhaltsstoffe medizinisch wirksam sind.
Die Nutzung von Heilpflanzen reicht bis in die Antike zurück – heute erlebt die pflanzliche Medizin (Phytotherapie) ein wachsendes Interesse, sowohl in der Naturheilkunde als auch in der evidenzbasierten Medizin. Typische Wirkstoffe sind z. B. ätherische Öle, Gerbstoffe, Bitterstoffe, Alkaloide oder Flavonoide.
Die Wirkung von Heilpflanzen kann vielfältig sein: von entzündungshemmend und antibakteriell über krampflösend bis hin zu beruhigend oder immunmodulierend. Bekannte Vertreter sind etwa Kamille (entzündungshemmend), Baldrian(beruhigend), Johanniskraut (stimmungsaufhellend), Pfefferminze (krampflösend) oder Thymian (schleimlösend). Je nach Pflanze werden verschiedene Zubereitungsformen verwendet, z. B. Tee, Tinktur, Extrakt oder Salbe.
Die moderne Wissenschaft untersucht Heilpflanzen zunehmend mit kontrollierten Studien. Für manche Pflanzen, wie z. B. Efeu bei Husten oder Mönchspfeffer bei PMS, gibt es bereits gute Evidenz. Andere werden traditionell genutzt, aber sind wissenschaftlich weniger gut belegt. Wichtig ist die fachgerechte Anwendung, um Nebenwirkungen oder Wechselwirkungen mit Medikamenten zu vermeiden.
