Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that exists in several forms: elemental mercury, inorganic mercury, and organic mercury (primarily methylmercury). Each form poses different health risks. The test is performed when elevated mercury exposure is suspected, for example through certain foods, occupational exposure, or dental amalgam fillings.

A blood test is best suited for detecting acute or recent mercury exposure. Methylmercury (organic form) binds to red blood cells and can be reliably measured in whole blood. The reference value for adults without special exposure is generally below 10 micrograms per liter (µg/L).
A urine test is particularly useful for detecting exposure to inorganic or elemental mercury, such as from occupational settings or dental amalgam. Mercury is typically measured in a 24-hour urine collection or a spot urine sample. The reference value is generally below 7 µg/g creatinine.
A hair analysis reflects long-term mercury exposure over the past several months, as mercury is incorporated into the hair shaft during growth. This method is especially suitable for detecting chronic methylmercury exposure, for example from regular fish consumption.
