Things worth knowing about "Mercury Therapy"

Mercury therapy refers to historical medical treatments using mercury compounds. Today, mercury is classified as highly toxic and is no longer used therapeutically in modern medicine.

What is Mercury Therapy?

Mercury therapy refers to the historical medical use of mercury and its compounds to treat various diseases. For centuries, mercury was considered one of the most important remedies in both Western and East Asian medicine. Today it is well established that mercury (Hg, Latin: Hydrargyrum) is a highly toxic heavy metal capable of causing severe health damage. Its therapeutic use has been entirely abandoned in modern medicine.

Historical Background

The use of mercury in medicine dates back to antiquity. In European medicine, mercury therapy gained particular prominence during the 15th and 16th centuries, when mercury preparations -- especially mercury chloride (calomel) and mercury ointment -- were used to treat syphilis. The treatment, known as the inunction cure, involved rubbing mercury ointment over the entire body of the patient.

Further Historical Applications

  • Treatment of syphilis (15th to 19th centuries)
  • Use as a laxative (calomel)
  • Disinfection and wound treatment (Mercurochrome, mercury chloride)
  • Treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis and furunculosis
  • Use in dentistry as a component of amalgam fillings (mercury-silver alloy)
  • Use as a preservative in vaccines (thiomersal)

Mechanism of Action of Historical Mercury Compounds

Mercury compounds act by binding strongly to sulfhydryl groups in proteins and enzymes. This inactivates microbial proteins, which explains the antimicrobial effect. In the case of the syphilis pathogen Treponema pallidum, high concentrations of mercury could achieve some inhibitory effect. However, the toxic side effects on the human body were considerable and often life-threatening.

Toxicity and Risks

Mercury is toxic in all its forms -- elemental, inorganic, and organic. The most important harmful effects concern:

  • Nervous system: Tremor, memory loss, personality changes, polyneuropathy (known as erethism mercurialis)
  • Kidneys: Kidney damage up to renal failure
  • Gastrointestinal tract: Nausea, vomiting, severe colic
  • Oral cavity: Tooth loss, jaw necrosis, excessive salivation
  • Immune system: Disruption of immune function

During the historical inunction cure, these signs of poisoning occurred regularly. Many patients did not die from syphilis itself, but from the consequences of mercury treatment.

Modern Perspective and Current Status

In modern medicine, mercury is no longer used therapeutically. The World Health Organization (WHO) and national health authorities have heavily restricted or banned the use of mercury-containing products in healthcare. Mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers have largely been replaced by safer alternatives. Thiomersal in vaccines is increasingly being substituted with thiomersal-free formulations. The Minamata Convention of the United Nations (2013) commits signatory states to the phase-out of mercury-containing products and processes worldwide.

Amalgam in Dentistry

One of the last remaining medical applications of mercury is dental amalgam, an alloy of mercury, silver, tin, and other metals used as a dental filling material. Its use is also being progressively restricted: the European Union has already banned amalgam use in children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers, and is planning a complete phase-out by 2025/2026.

Pseudoscientific Mercury Therapies Today

In alternative medicine and pseudoscientific circles, mercury-containing preparations or so-called detoxification therapies are occasionally promoted, claiming to remove mercury from the body. These practices are not scientifically validated, can be dangerous, and are explicitly rejected by medical societies. In cases of genuine mercury poisoning, treatment is carried out through established chelation therapy under medical supervision.

Calorie expenditure

Calorie expenditure refers to the total amount of energy the body uses each day. It depends on basal metabolic rate, physical activity, and other individual factors.

CDL

CDL (Chlorine Dioxide Solution) is an aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide used as a disinfectant. Its use as an internal remedy is medically unrecognized and dangerous.

Calorie deficit

A calorie deficit occurs when the body takes in fewer calories than it burns. It is the fundamental principle behind weight loss and is widely used in dietary management.
