Metabolism refers to all biochemical processes in the body involved in energy production, the synthesis of body substances, and the breakdown of metabolic by-products. Disruptions in these processes can have serious health consequences if not detected and treated in time.
The most well-known form of metabolic screening is newborn screening, which is routinely carried out in many countries within the first days of life. In Germany, for example, it is performed between 36 and 72 hours after birth.
