The medication is available in many countries as a prescription drug and is offered both as oral tablets and as an injectable solution.

Mechanism of Action

The precise mechanism of action of methocarbamol has not been fully elucidated. It is believed to primarily act as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant, inhibiting the transmission of nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. Methocarbamol does not act directly on the muscle fibers or the neuromuscular junction; instead, it exerts its effects through higher nerve centers in the spinal cord and brain, thereby reducing skeletal muscle spasm.

Indications and Uses

Methocarbamol is primarily used for:

Acute muscle spasms and musculoskeletal pain, for example following injury or overexertion
Back pain with a muscular component
Painful muscle cramps in the area of the spine
As an adjunct to rest and physical therapy for musculoskeletal conditions

In some countries, the intravenous formulation is also used in the management of tetanus to help control severe muscle spasms.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of methocarbamol depends on the severity of symptoms and the individual response of the patient. Typical adult oral doses range from 1,500 mg to 4,500 mg per day, divided into several individual doses. Treatment is generally limited to a short period of a few weeks, as the drug is designed for short-term therapy. The exact dosage should always be determined by the treating physician.

Side Effects

Like all medications, methocarbamol can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

Drowsiness and sedation
Dizziness and balance disturbances
Nausea and stomach discomfort
Headache
Blurred vision

Rare but serious adverse effects may include allergic reactions, jaundice (yellowing of the skin), and disturbances of consciousness. Patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery while taking this medication.

Drug Interactions

Methocarbamol may enhance the effects of other CNS-depressant substances, including:

Alcohol
Benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam)
Opioid analgesics
Sleep aids and sedatives
Certain antihistamines

Concurrent use of these substances should only occur under medical supervision, as the risk of excessive sedation or respiratory depression increases.

Contraindications

Methocarbamol should not be used in:

Myasthenia gravis (a neuromuscular disorder)
